Project-Based Learning Blocks
Imagine our BBA scholar is working on one of their ambitious 12-week long projects with a small group of peers. They were tasked with designing, proposing, and implementing a mural to be painted in downtown Las Vegas. The mural need to honor a local leader and students will learn content from history, math, science, and ELA to support their projects.

Students self and peer-manage big 12-week projects. Project block is self-managed by students through a daily “Need to Know” checklist to guide their own learning, research, and project development. Students might complete tasks and assignments, conduct research on their project, or get their hands messy creating and building.
Our BBA student might be drawing a mock up of their mural, selecting images and quotations from the life of their chosen leader. They use a laptop to gather research on their leader, then investigate the classroom library for a book on the topic. They are mastering grade-level reading, writing, and research standards, driven by their own desire for learning. |
Collaboration is keyVertical Divider

No one achieves anything great alone, and at BBA we know that collaboration is a key skill that all our students must develop for success in the twenty-first century. Our students work collaboratively on projects and to create classroom culture.
Our BBA students working on their murals have formed a natural group of three students who all want their murals to be placed on the same wall. The group works together to write letters to the owner of the building, as well as the City of Las Vegas. They also build a petition for residents of the building to sign and start brainstorming ways to get 30 signatures in support of their mural. |
Teacher-facilitated learning in small groupsVertical Divider

Throughout the lesson block, teachers are targeting support to students who need it. Whether supporting with a student’s writing, reinforcing math and science concepts, or providing language supports, the teacher’s role is to ensure every student can succeed.
Our BBA scholar gets pulled into a small group to reiterate some of the scientific concepts from this unit. The murals are expected to be able to withstand year-round weather conditions in Las Vegas, and this small-group reteach focuses on weather-related vocabulary and applying knowledge of weather to their mural’s justification. Later in the block, our BBA student gets pulled into a writing workshop small group, working with other students who need help with conclusion paragraphs. Reiterating this skill helps prepare them for their paper justifying the location and plans for their mural. |
Interest-Based ClassesEach trimester, students take courses in a variety of electives based on their passions and the passions of our teachers. Students might learn how to sew or perform in a musical or learn sign language.
|
Well-Rounded ElectivesIn addition, students have elective courses in art, theater, dance, physical education, and more. BBA students are well-rounded and enjoy a wide variety of opportunities.

Direct-Instruction MathSome subjects - math and reading - benefit from additional, focused time on task. At BBA, all scholars engage in additional reading and literacy blocks as well as direct-instruction math. This time allows us to provide high-quality math instruction, address grade-level skills, and ensure every student is thriving as a mathematician.
Mentorship & AdvisoryCommunity is one of our core values and we live it every day. All students are part of a mentorship pair, one older student with one younger student. They meet weekly to work together, share ideas, and be in community. In addition, each day concludes with advisory time. In a small group of students with their homeroom teacher, students have closing circle, reflect on the day, and celebrate their growth and achievements.
After-School CareFor students and families desiring the service, after school care is available for students. A combination of one-on-one tutoring and academic games, as well as a snack, ensures every student is well cared for until their family can come pick them up.
