Kathy Rudd, principal of Battle Born Academy, which will open in August, said new charters are responding to inequity toward socioeconomically disadvantaged children.

Most charter schools try to carve out a niche beyond small class sizes... Battle Born will be “project-based.”

​Students will think big-picture in every subject — “learning through the lens of a bigger project around big, worldly, weighty questions” and culminating with actions like testifying before the legislature or designing a mural, Rudd said.

BBA was recently featured, alongside the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority, in a whitepaper detailing best practices for community engagement for charter schools, authored by WestEd, a nonprofit, nonpartisan education and social research group.

The founders of Battle Born began by defining their community based on the zip code they intended to serve. However, after engaging with families and community partners, they quickly realized that families in neighboring zip codes also wanted to provide input.

Other educators, nonprofit leaders, and community leaders were also part of whom Kathy and Katie defined as their community, whether or not those people currently offered programs or services in downtown Las Vegas. As Kathy stated, “Just because certain community organizations don’t currently work in this neighborhood doesn’t mean they won’t be a great option for our families.”
